We woke up to frost on the windows of our room at the hostel in downtown Prague. But, neither the chilly weather nor the 7-hour time change hindered our sense of adventure. The girls on the trip (Elena, Josie, Joy, Baija, and I) walked through the streets of Prague early, before we had to meet the rest of the crew. We decided to try the closest breakfast cafe, which we soon realized was too fancy for a group of jet-lagged Americans just looking for a menu in English and a large cup of coffee. Luckily, we found a Starbucks, and after a quick stop we were back on our feet to meet up with the group (Zach, Joseph, Andrew, Ash, Ms. Grant, and Mr. Hebert) and exchange our US dollars to Czech korunas (crowns).
The hours spent waiting in the station only heightened our excitement to board the train. But, we soon found out that navigating the station was a bit more complicated than we anticipated. When our train arrived at the platform and a flood of people departed the train. We could not see the labels on the train cars, and we were frantically trying to determine which car to board. With time ticking, everyone jumped on board and just tried to find a seat; however, once on board it was evident that there were not enough seats for all the people. Despite being crammed in the aisle with our group and all our luggage, the views from the train brought a treat to the eye and was the first time seeing the rural landscape and smaller villages within the Czech Republic.
Once in Brno, we were greeted by several students from Mendel University who helped us navigate the bus and tram, which was the public transportation we utilized while in Brno, over to the dorms. Without these students, it would have been difficult to find our way around the city for the first time. Once settled into our dorm rooms, we reconvened with the Mendel Students and met Dr. Daniel Falta, who is the vice-dean of the AgriSciences Faculty at Mendel University.
